Beauty Myths: BUSTED

wipedmag

Finding the right skincare products isn’t a walk in the park, it’s a whole journey of trial and error and as your skin constantly changes due to either the weather, stress or even your diet - this may result in having to adjust your normal routine.

It’s so easy to google ‘how to get good skin’ and take the first article and run with it, however you’re bound to come across many myths and misconceptions.

It’s time to start putting these common myths to bed, so we can all start focusing on a tailor-made routine, as skin care isn’t a one-size-fits-all type of situation!

Here are our top 3 myths:

#1 : Hot showers are good for your skin

Of course after you’ve had a long tiring day, you might want a hot steamy shower to wind down and get rid of the day. But, very hot water can dry out your skin and strip away your natural oils.

Are you stepping out the shower and having red patches on your skin? Note that your water is way too hot! Try lowering your temperature, or even shorten the time you spend in the shower.

#2: If it’s burning, it means it’s working

This is a big NO - if you experience a burning sensation after using a new product, you need to remove it immediately and cool your face down with water. Sometimes a little tingling is OK for a short period of time, (with some products) but not burning. This could indicate that you may be allergic to the product or have really sensitive skin.

Sometimes it’s worth testing the product on the back of your hand or the back of your ear/neck however, it’s obviously not a direct comparison to being on your face but it could save you from having a bad reaction.

#3 : Touching your face will give you acne

Whilst this isn’t entirely false, it isn’t the main reason why acne occurs or the only thing! We know acne can appear for many different reasons from stress to clogged up pores and new skincare products.

Think about the amount of times you scratch your head and then itch your face. Or the time you spend talking on the phone without headphones or, scrolling and touching your face after...when was the last time you cleaned your phone with antibacterial?

Do you clean out your nails every-time you wash your hands? Remember they harbour lots of bacteria too!

A lot of things that we do on a daily basis we don’t even realise and they are most likely contributing factors to a break out. Try not to touch your face too much and of course, remember to thoroughly wash your hands before applying any skincare products.

A lot of us take friends and family’s skincare tips/advice as facts, or simply try them out because ‘they said so’ - but just because it works for them, doesn’t mean it works for you! It’s best to find out what is right for YOUR skin, as trying out different products without knowing your skin type can lead to break outs - it may be worth going to see a dermatologist if you’re really struggling.
