LONDON FASHION WEEK: Why are the larger fashion brands falling behind in skin diversity?

As London Fashion Week has come to an end, many of us were expecting to see this long-awaited process of body diversity to be flaunted on the catwalks. But like always, many high-end fashion brands have plateaued in the brackets of leggy, thin, typically-unflawed models to showcase their garments.

But why are they having such a hard time following in the steps of so many high-street and online retailers who have taken leading advocate roles in pushing skin diversity?

During LFW’s bonanza, plus-size advocates protested on the doors of some of the most luxury and high-profile fashion brands of the week, making a stance for acceptance, urging for “more curves on the catwalk.”

Those of the crowd consisted of plus-size British Models (whom were not invited to model during LFW) and Founder of Simply Be fashion label. “It would be great to see more diverse representation of body shape on the runways.” Says Simply Be owner, Ed Watson.

We have seen many high street and online shops express their desire to breaking the norm of conventional models. Brands such as Pretty Little Thing’s recent campaign ‘Go Girl’ use models of all shapes, sizes, ethnicities and disabilities while In The Style x Danny Dyers’ recent collection aims to inspire women to accept their skin in the new ‘Love Yaself’ campaign.

With this new drive for diversity, we see collection after collection jump on this movement, and in payoff, their sales have high-rocketed. But why is it taking the high-end fashion brands so long to join in?

There is no denying we still have a long way to go, but why are some of the biggest voices in fashion not participating in diverse representation?
