So we're beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel! Bars will be opening soon and hopefully holidays aren't too far in the distance! With this in mind, if you've used the gyms being closed as an excuse to not have moved for the last three months, it's time to jump up off that sofa and be active again! Even if you have been keeping the exercise up (well done!), here's a few ideas on how to keep going...
Looks like lockdown has made everyone into runners! Being so lucky with the weather these last few months, it would be rude not to! Get those trainers on and go for a jog around the block. The more times you do this, the more you'll get used to it and after a week, you can start running some distance! Like all exercise, running is something you can improve as you get used to it. Each time you run, try to beat your record time or even go a bit further - get the Strava app to help you with this.
As well as just being an overall healthy activity, running releases endorphins which can lift your spirits and do wonders for your wellbeing. It also really seems to help set you up for the day.
If you can't stand the thought of running but like the idea of getting out, you could go on a bike ride. Cycling allows you to be out for longer as you can easily carry a packed lunch, drinks and a blanket for stopping off in a sunny field mid way. You could even cycle to the shops or to a friend's instead of driving.
There are so many online exercise classes since lockdown began, that you can find with a simple search on Facebook or YouTube. From hour long body combat classes to 15 minute ab workouts, you can find anything you want. Once you've found one, you can pop your phone or tablet screen up on a table and work out anywhere in your house or garden! It couldn't be easier.
Weights are useful with almost any workout, but remember you don't need actual hand weights if you don't have them - pick up a can of beans or a full water bottle and you're good to go.
Keeping fit and healthy is extremely important now even more than usual, because of the expected rise in ill mental health from being in lockdown. The endorphins released when exercising trigger a rush of positivity for 2-3 hours after, and a mild happy buzz for the next 24 hours.
